Muslim Green Team

MAS Service Corps

Holds First Annual Ecofair in Santa Clara, CA

Santa Clara, CA October 12th, 2008 The Muslim American Society is proud to announce the First Annual Muslim Green Team Ecofair.  The event took place at the Muslim Community Association in Santa Clara on Oct 12, 2008.

Muslim Green Team is a Muslim American Society (MAS) Service Corps Campaign. It began in 2008 in the Bay Area chapter of MAS. MAS believes that living a “greener” lifestyle is not only healthier and socially responsible, but an essential and mandatory component of a Muslim’s life. Muslim Green Team is a comprehensive, grassroots, environmental campaign, promoting environmentally conscious and sustainable practices in all spheres of human activity.

"Simple changes in your own life can have major environmental impact. The EcoFair aims to educate people about environmental issues, and show them simple changes that can play an important role in protecting the environment. The Prophet Mohammed taught us that God welcomes actions that are done consistently, even if they are small. By individually undertaking small changes, we can together bring about big benefits for our community and our world." Said Bhawana Kamil, Director of MAS Bay Area Outreach and Muslim Green Team.

The Muslim Green Team Ecofair was the group’s first public event and by all accounts was a wonderful success!  The Ecofair hosted over 500 guests and around 30 environmental organizations were represented. Those in attendance had the opportunity to hear 6 guest speakers and receive the Muslim Green Team “Green Bags”. Over 1000 of these environmentally friendly, re-useable tote bags were distributed.

Several organizations were represented with displays including a Prius and electric scooters, organic gifts and baby clothing, native plants and city trees, Silicon Valley Power and Santa Clara Water. The event also had a book exchange and a variety of children’s activities including an environmental story time.
